Bishop Seeks Govt’s Support For Mission Schools
The Catholic Bishop of
Port Harcourt Diocese, Most Rev. Camilius Archibong Etukudoh, has appealed to Rivers State Government to assist in the rehabilitation of mission schools in the state to restore their former glory.
The Bishop who made the appeal at the official commissioning of a library, Information and Communication Technology Centre (I.C.T) among others at Stella Maris College Port Harcourt, recently, said that many mission schools were in very bad shapes when handed over to the missionary in the state.
He said, the shape of the schools before handing over to missionaries had become big challenge for the Catholic Education Board
The Bishop commended however, the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for extending the provision of free books to mission schools, including Stella Maris College, Port Harcourt.
Rev. Etukudoh assured of the Stella Maris College’s authority a befitting quarters for principal and teachers to ensure close monitoring as well as proper care for the students.
He called for collaboration with the government, well meaning individuals and NGos to fulfill the goals of the mission schools.
Earlier, the principal of the school, Rev. Fr. Fabian Nwaeke thanked the Rivers State government , Old Boys Association of the school, and Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the school for their immense contribution for the school to achieve full boarding arrangement, staff accommodation, 40 KVA Generator, Library, I.C.T among others.
The principal also thanked United Bank of Africa (UBA), the Rivers East Senator, companies and individuals who have equally donated books, set of computers, sports materials among others for the school.
Also speaking the Director of Catholic Education Board, Very Rev. Charles Agu attributed the recent improvement in the state education to the handing over of schools to missions in the state.
He called on Governor Amaechi to extend his good programmes of free education to the mission schools.
He commended the Governor Amaechi for his policy and programmes to reform education that would even affect positively on the generation to come.
