RSG To Revive Public Library
The Rivers State Government says it will revive public libraries in the state to boost reading culture among the youth.
Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Dr Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, gave the assurance at a skills acquisition training programme organised by Future Rays International in conjunction with Rivers State Library Board in Port Harcourt.
Dr Banigo Stated that so much had gone wrong in the state under the past administration, stressing that the Public Library at Bernard Carr Street, Old Port Harcourt Township was a reflection of institutional breakdown inherited by the Wike-led administration.
“I am surprised that the State Library had deteriorated so much that current reading materials are not available for the reading public”, Banigo observed.
She, however, assured that the present state government would bring back the glory of the library and equip new ones built under the Port Harcourt World Book Capital Project to enhance the reading culture that had been jettisoned due to internet evolution.
The deputy governor recalled how she used the library effectively to prepare for her A’ Level examinations to gain admission to study Medicine during her early school career, and assured that the State Library would be revived to cater for the needs of researchers and students.
Dr Banigo commended future Rays International and the state library for partnering government in the empowerment of Niger Delta youth.
She urged the youth of Niger Delta region to take advantage of opportunities created by NGOs operating in the area to acquire relevant skills that would enhance their future.
The deputy governor noted that the skills acquired within the short period of training had demonstrated that the future of Niger Delta youth was bright.
“There is future for the Niger Delta youth. It is no longer time to be associated with militancy, kidnapping, cultism, and other violent crimes”, she stated.
