Don Wants Humanities Faculty In RSUST
Professor of’ English and
Comparative Literature at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Chioma Opara, has suggested that the Institute of Foundation Studies (IF$) of the university should be elevated to a full-fledged Faculty cf Hurnarrities.
Prof. Opara made this recommendation while delivering the 39th Inaugural Lecture of the university titled ‘Towards lntegration in Heterogeneity Poetics, Conflict and Gender Politics in Literature’ on Wednesday. The lecturer who was the’Director of IFS noted ‘that integration presupposes versatility, accommodation and vision, adding that the elevation of the institute to a Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences would facilitate integrative possibilities.
The former director of the institute who expressed dissatisfaction over the falling standards in the use of English amongst students, advocated that the teaching of the Language in the country sbould be reviewed and made more effective particularly at the primary and secondary levels for a’ solid foundation.
She expressed worry that no winner emerged for the 2015 NLNG’s prize for Literature due to what she described as poor use of language in the entries that were submitted for the award.
To enhance the proficiency of products of RSUST in English Language, Prof. Opara also recommended that students in all the faculties should take courses in English for four semesters and Literature for two semesters.
In his remarks, the Ag.Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Blessing Didia lauded the contributions of Prof. Opara to knowledge within and outside Nigeria, describing her as an outstanding scholar.
Prof. Didia promised that the authorities of the school would look into the recornmendations by the lecturer.
