Group Condemns N’Delta Underdevelopment
The Co-coordinator of the African Youth Foundation for Peace and Community Development, Dr George Ela has condemned a situation whereby the natural resources of the Niger Delta is evacuated to other parts of the country while leaving the former undeveloped.
Dr Ela made the assertion recently during first Niger Delta Peace Convention at Abua central, Rivers State.
According to him, “while we regret peace in the Niger Delta, we also need peace in our homes” and commended all those who had worked towards return of peace in the Niger Delta.
Dr Ela said the group had taken care of the medical problem of about 100 widows and 50 children under the age of 12 years.
Speaking earlier as the chairman of the occasion, the Chairman of the National Orientation Agency, Rivers State Chapter, Chief Andy Nweye advised youths, especially those from Abua/Odual Local Government Area to embrace peace.
He told the audience that in the 80’s and 90’s Abua was a peaceful environment where one could go out even in the night and relax without any intimidation until crisis crept in.
Chief Nweye decried a situation where some places in Abua are now a no-go area, saying “Abua was the only place where there was no armed robbery until chieftaincy and political problems crept in, youths became cultists, houses burnt down and people lost their lives”.
He advised people to turn to God for peace, adding “the battle is spiritual”.
The Niger Delta Peace Conference which was organised by African Youth Foundation or Peace and Community Development in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency was a week-long programme geared towards bringing peace to the Niger Delta region.
The week-long programme with the theme, “New Start: Pathway To Peace, featured peace rally, seminars, lecturers, talk-shows, symposia, free medical care for widows and school children under 12 years of age.
Highlights of the programme were presentation of awards to those who have contributed to bringing peace in the Niger Delta, lighting of the Niger Delta Peace Candle and Prayers for the Niger Deleta by the Abua Ministers of God.
