Crime Fighting: RSG Scores Police High
The Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has expressed satisfaction over the security performance of the Nigeria Police Force under the present Commissioner of Police, Mr Bala Hassan.
The State Governor made the commendation in Port Harcourt yesterday in his goodwill message to the book launch, titled “Crime and Criminal Justice System in Nigeria” written by Mr Bala Hassan and Barrister Jerry Amadi.
The Governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Magnus Abe said that the police boss in the State was living up to expectation of the people of the state.
He said the State has noticed tremendous security improvement, over the situation before the Police Commissioner took over the command in the state.
The Governor then launched the book with the sum of N5 million, saying the book is an input toward the fight against crime in the State and Nigeria in general.
He commended the authors for their elucidation of the criminal justice system, saying that the work would be very useful to all security conscious citizens in the state and the nation in general.
He then tasked the authors, particularly the Police Commissioner to continue with his security plans that would take the state to greater heights.
On behalf of his co-author the Commissioner of Police, Mr Hassan said the book “Crime and Criminal Justice System in Nigeria” is generally concerned with the variety of crimes and the ultimate result of conviction after trial.
He said the cause of crime, the philosophy underlying punishment and the chain of the criminal justice system, which include police, courts and prisons are uncommon issues discussed in the book.
According to him, the book provided brief history of criminal law, history of police, courts and prisons in Nigeria.
The author further said that the book discuses the Sharia law in Nigeria with its implication on fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens.
Other dignitaries who graced the occasion were members of the State House of Assembly, and the Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 6 Calabar, among others.
