INC Cautions Rivers On Waterfronts Demolition
The umbrella body of the Ijaws worldwide, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has called on the Rivers State Government to give a human face to its plans to redevelop the waterfronts in the state.
President of INC, Dr. Atuboyedia Obianime, made the appeal while answering questions at The Tide’s Round Table, a weekly personality interview programme organised by the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation, recently.
Dr. Obianime recommended that the government should tow a cautious path over the planned redevelopment in order not to deprive the Ijaws, who mainly occupy such areas of their natural environment.
His words: “For you to move people from the waterfronts which is seen as their ancestral area and then just look at them based on the concept between the body of civility and development.
“You must conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The EIA must talk about social impact, under the EIA, you must also talk about government social responsibility. You just don’t demolish because the people sold you their land”,
Besides the EIA of the scheme, Dr. Obianime also suggested that the redevelopment exercise should be conducted in such a way to avoid the people viewing it with ethnic colouration.
While agreeing that the areas have over the years become haven for criminal activities, the INC boss was of the opinion that the problem has arisen because of poor security and intelligence monitoring in the country.
He maintained that rather than destroying those areas, government should work out security modalities to tackle the crime rate in those areas.
The INC president noted that it would be hasty to implement the Eso Panel Report, which recommended the redevelopment of those areas without taking into consideration the ethnic and social impact of the exercise.
On the other hand, Dr. Obianime has called on the Rivers State Government to revisit an earlier report on the waterfronts redevelopment labeled Taiwo’s Report.
The INC president stated that the Taiwo’s Report had recommended the need of redirecting development in those areas by helping the people to plan development themselves.
Dr. Obianime argued that the Taiwo’s Report was holistic and better attempt to redevelop the waterfront and wondered why it was abandoned by previous administrations in the state.
