RSG Wants The Best In LGAs – Cookey-Gam
Chairperson of the Rivers State Local Government Areas Assessment Committee, Dame Aleruchi Cookey-Gam says the aim of the body’s project tour of the LGAs is to instill good leadership at the grassroots.
Dame Cookey-Gam made the assertion in Opobo Town, while leading the committee in a project tour of the LGA, saying local government council must be accountable to the people.
She explained that the tour would ensure that projects executed by the local councils are commensurate to funds received.
Prior to the visit the committee had demanded the pay roll and account statements of the local government areas as mandated by the state Governor, who had set up the body few months ago.
In his remarks, chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Council, Hon. Maclean Uranta affirmed that the exercise would make the councils more accountable to the people, as expected by the Governor.
Hon. Uranta disclosed that so far the council has executed not less than five projects including the Opobo Hotel, Council staff quarters, acquisition of six marine boats, laying of interlocking pavement within the town and others.
He lamented that despite the dwindling revenue in the local government, the council has in one year generated over N7.79 million and does not owe staff salaries.
However, he observed that the council is faced with the challenges of huge salaries and allowances totalling about N69 million monthly, including that of political appointees.
With the huge fund expended in salary payment, the Opobo/Nkoro Council boss noted that few funds are left for developmental projects.
Apart from funding, he lamented that the area is facing transport problems, security and huge debt which according to him are being settled by his administration.
