Ex-LG Boss Tasks FG Post -Amnesty Programme
The determination of the Federal Government in implementing its post-amnesty commitments has been described as the way forward in achieving sustainable peace in the Niger Delta region.
Making this assertion in Port Harcourt, a former Chairman of Odi Local Government Council in Bayelsa State, Mr. Tari Bolou, called on the President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua-led administration to show sincerity in its dealings with the ex-militants to create the needed goodwill in moving the region forward.
According to Mr. Bolou, “the Niger Delta people are grateful to President Umaru Yar’Adua for the political will exhibited by him in implementing the amnesty programme in the first place and bringing peace to the area but we are saying he should fulfill his post-amnesty promises so that there will be lasting peace in the area”.
“We have to see sincerity on the part of the President and those he has appointed to implement the amnesty programme. We need peace and these boys who have surrendered their arms have to be encouraged by way of fulfilling the promises made to them,” he stressed.
Advising the repentant militants to reciprocate President Yar’Adua’s gesture by keying into the rehabilitation and reintegration programme of the amnesty committee, the former Council boss encouraged them to support efforts aimed at bringing lasting peace to the region.
Mr. Tari Bolou, who was a one-time Commissioner in charge of Finance and Administration in the Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC), noted that for the Niger Delta to have sustainable peace and development al hands must be on deck.
“We all have to work together to ensure that the effort of the President yields the desired result as in peace returning to the Niger Delta. This means all hands must be on deck for us to achieve this,” Mr. Bolou said.
He warned against any attempt by any group to frustrate the amnesty programme, saying the people of the region were tired of the crisis and desire a peaceful atmosphere for sustainable development to take place.
