Cross River State Government says it has concluded arrangements to pay N1.1b furniture allowance to all political office holders and appointees in the Local Government Councils in the State.
Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr. Effiom Edem Ekong who disclosed this to newsmen in Calabar, said he has secured approval for disbursement from His Excellency, Senator Liyel Imoke, saying that all the beneficiaries will be paid as soon as possible.
He noted that the payment will bring some relief to the beneficiaries and ginger them to put in their best in the discharge of their duties.
In a bid to enforce uniformity in the local government byelaws, he said that a team of consultants were engaged to review the laws which, he noted, are out-dated and cannot have any reasonable impact in the 21st century society, saying that the review and fine tuning exercise have been concluded to standardise and properly document the laws.
The Commissioner also announced plan to boost internally generated revenue and reduce over dependency on federal allocation.
This, he said, will be enhanced by the discovery of virgin areas and leakages which had over the years hampered revenue generation, adding that plans have reached advanced stage to mobilise staff of councils to collaborate with revenue consultants to implement revenue collection as endorsed by the council chairmen and the Governor.
On budgeting, which has remained the baneto development at the third tier of government, Mr. Ekong said his Ministry, through series of workshops, will continue to consolidate on proper budgeting, monitoring and implementation. According to him, that the inspectorate unit of the Ministry is now strengthened to carry out routine inspection of projects across the State with strict compliance
of due process to ensure full implementation.
