Fashola Names Road After Tinubu’s Late Associate
Former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu on Monday rejected the renaming of the recently upgraded 1.5 kilometre Hycinth Enuwa Road in Ikeja after him.
Tinubu instead implored Governor Babatunde Fashola to name the road in the Central Business District (CBD), Ikeja, after late Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo, a close associate.
While making the request, the former governor described Olowopopo as a friend, brother and one of the pillars of his administration between 1999 and 2007.
Reports say the late politician, until his death on March 14, was the chairman of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
Fashola had intended naming the road, which was expanded to a three lane dual carriage way, after Tinubu, as part activities to mark his birth 58th birthday on March 29.
“Olowopopo was one of the strong pillars of our administration when we took over in 1999 and he supervised the implementation of our blue print on healthcare to a successful completion.
“He was abroad but I had to invite him home to be part of our administration and he contributed immensely in the implementation of ‘Jigi Bola’ and other health programmes,” he said.
Timubu said that his request for the road to be named after the late physician was immortalise him for contributions to the development of Lagos State.
Fashola, in acceding to the request, said the upgrading of the road symbolised government’s commitment to attract private investors to the Ikeja Business distic.
“Through the provision of a critical infrastructure to ease cost and time of doing business, the road will improve the efficiency of transacting business with government in Alausa,” he said.
Fashola reclocated their head offices or opened new ones there.
“Since then, Lagos has witnessed simultaneous expansion of business on both the island and the mainland,” he said.
Also speaking, Mr. Ganiyu Johnson, the Special Adviser on Works and Insrastructure to Fashola, said government would gradually upgrade and rehabilitate adjacent roads in the state.
