As the state government kicks-off the second phase of its road rehabilitation exercise tagged: “Operation Zero Pothole,” it has disclosed plans to include federal roads.
The state Commissioner for Works, Hon Dakuku Peterside, who gave the hint in a chat with newsmen shortly after flagging-off the exercise on Tuesday in Port Harcourt said the aim of including federal roads in the exercise was to make sure that citizens of the state enjoy free roads during the rainy season and beyond.
Hence he said the city of Port Harcourt and its environs have been demarcated into five zones with a dedicated contractor that would cover each of the area.
The Work Commissioner explained that, “Operation Zero Pothole” was an intervention programme initiated by the ministry to complement the activities of the State Road Rehabilitation Agency in line with the vision of the Governor to have a pothole- free state.
In addition, he stated that the ministry is equally working in liason with the state Inter-Ministerial Committee on Drainage and Deflooding to ensure that the city is rid of flood throughout the rainy season.
He stated that the vision of the present administration was to ensure that all parts of the state, including rural areas are accessible all year round, noting that there are no part of the state that do not have less than two to three road projects ongoing.
In all rural communities we are making sure that they are accessible by land transport and also by water transport,” he said.
In addition to that, the works commissioner noted that the state government was also daulising all major roads in Port Harcourt with a view to making Port Harcourt the choice destination both business and tourists.
Currently, he disclosed that the ministry is constructing over 850 kilometre of roads with over 40 bridges in the length and breadth of the state.
