Commissioner Warns Road Contractor
Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Hon. Dakuku Peterside has warned the contractor handling the dualisation of Eneka/Rumukurushi Road, Ukre Interconstruct Ltd to speed up the pace of work or risk termination of his contract.
Hon. Peterside, who handed down the warning during a routine projects inspection exercise, lamented that with over one year at site, the contractor had merely achieved clearing and filling six kilometers of the road.
He explained that the construction of the 14 kilometers road was intended to last for 18 months saying the sluggish pace is not acceptable to government. The Commissioner said the situation on ground would be reviewed and if the issue is that of the contractor lacking the capacity to deliver the job on time according to specification, government would have no option but terminate the contract.
Earlier, the site engineer had explained that the issue of non payment of compensation to residents whose property were on the right of way and the relocation of Power Holding Company Nigeria (PHCN) facilities on the alignment of the road had affected the pace of work but promised to make remarkable improvement.
At the Mile 3 Abuja by-pass road project, the Commissioner directed that an inter-ministerial meeting of all relevant government departments, agencies, the contractor and residents of the area be convened to tackle the numerous issues, ranging from the slow pace of work and the attitude of road users who have converted the road to car park making vehicular movement almost impossible on the road.
According to him, he was not impressed with the level of achievement recorded by the contractor pointing out, that “assessing the road on the face value would appear that so much had been done but technically a lot still needed to be done”.
The Commissioner however expressed confidence that the job could be delivered in two months with renewed commitment by the contractor.
Also visited was the Rumuolumeni shore protection project where he expressed satisfaction with the progress made unlike what was on ground in the past, but urged the contractor to maintain the tempo.
At Kala Bus Stop, where James Ikegwuru Road links Ikwerre and Ada George roads, Hon. Peterside said, he was impressed with the pace of work at the site saying barely two months at site, Asphalt Unity Construction Ltd has achieved a lot despite the issues of the relocation of PHCN facilities and payment of compensation to residents whose property were affected.
The Chokocho dualisation and Old Aba roads projects were also inspected.
