Uduaghan Calls For Collaboration On Children Welfare
Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has lamented the continued forms of children exploitation that still exist in Africa and urged collaboration among stakeholders in planning and budgeting for the well-being of the child.
Uduaghan, represented by his deputy, Professor Amos Utuama at the Day of the African Child celebration in Asaba, noted with sadness that the goals set by the United Nations and the African Union on the implementation of the rights of the child were still far from being achieved.
He observed, “Various forms of the exploitation of children still exist through child abuse and neglect, which have given rise to the violation of the rights of the child.
”In spite of our sustained efforts at reducing the level of poverty in society, it still looms large with the attendant adverse effects on the well being and development of the African Child.”
According to him, the theme of the 2010 celebration, “Planning and Budgeting for the Well Being of the Child,” could only by achieved if the government, individuals and non-governmental agencies were partners.
“Planning and budgeting for the well being of our children is a collective responsibility, which should pre-date the birth of the child…We should recognise the fact that planning and budgeting for the well being of our children rests with all stakeholders.
“I enjoin all parents to plan and give birth to the number of children they can adequately cater for. I am also calling on parents and care givers to imbibe the culture of birth registration as this will help the government and Non-Governmental Organisations to plan and budget adequately for their well being and development.”
Uduaghan informed that his administration had made concerted efforts at making life more meaningful for children, listing the implementation of the Child Right Law, free ante-natal care and the recent flag-off of the under five free medical services among others.
”To reduce the incidences of poverty across the state, the micro credit scheme was introduced to empower our families towards establishing their own business, thereby putting them in a better footing to plan and budget for the well being and development of their children,” he said.
