Bursary: LG Pays N150,000 To Law Students, Others
Bonny Local Government Area (LGA) in Rivers State has commenced the payment of Bursary worth N150,000 each to students of the local government currently in Law School in the country.
The Chief Press Secretary to the local government, Miss Harriet Jamaica, made this known to The Tide at the weekend.
According to her, Chairman of the local government area, Mr. Edward E. Pepple, said it was the council’s “way of appreciating the efforts of these students who have taken to making their lives better in the face of tempting societal vices in the society”.
In addition , bursary has also been paid to students of the local government in the three tertiary institutions in the state.
They are Rivers State University of Science and Technology, University of Port Harcourt and Rivers State Polytechnic. All the payments are for the 2009/2010 academic session.
One of the beneficiaries of the N150,000.00, Mr. Clinton Dan Jumbo, expressed both surprise and happiness for the local government’s gesture.
“I was really surprised when I got a bank cheque for a bursary of N150,000.00 from Bonny Local Government. It will indeed be a relief to us.”
“Let me use this opportunity to commend the Chairman, (Mr. Pepple) for his foresightedness in infrastructural development, youth empowerment and capacity building.
The council’s boss, Miss Jamaica continued, had also slashed the transport fare from Port Harcourt to Bonny and vice versa.
Passengers, beginning from the 16th of June now pay N1,000.00 in LG-owned boats, and N1,200.00 in privately owned boats as against the former fare of N1,500.00.
The change in fare, she explained, was sequel to a meeting held between the council boss and speed boat owners in the area.
