NIPR Boss Lists Factors For Encouraging Female Politicians
The Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Rivers State chapter, Barrister Karibi George has Identified education, advocacy and media sensitisation as key strategies to sustain and secure women’s participation in politics in Nigeria.
Barrister George stated this recently while presenting a paper on strategies for women participation in politics at a workshop organized by the Rivers State Gender/Advocacy Project in Port Harcourt.
The NIPR boss argued that “where education, advocacy and media sensitisation fail, people could resort to legislation in order to secure sustainability”.
Though he would not suggest that women should be appointed or elected into offices that they are not qualified for, he advocated for the lifting of cultural and institutional prejudices against women so that the society would benefit from what they could offer”.
The chairman, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Mrs. Florence Fiberesima identified financial constraint, education and negative cultural attitudes as some of the factors militating against women participation in politics and governance.
She picked holes in the discrimination against women in political and public life.
According to her, nine out of the 109 Senators are women, while 26 out of the 360 House of Representatives members re women, adding that in the 990 seats in the various state House of Assembly there are only 53 women.
She said the figure is a far cry from what it should be if women are allowed to participate in politics and governance”, she noted.
On the way forward, Mrs. Fiberesima, who was represented by Barrister Adata Briggs, Programme Officer, FIDA said government at all levels must exercise the political will to create a enabling environment for gender equality through concrete policies, programmes and resources.
Earlier in his address, the Director, Gender/Advocacy Project, Rivers State Ministry of Information and Communications, Mr. Rufus Direh said the workshop was designed to boost the current national call b Nigeria’s first Lady, Deme Patience Jonathan for political and economic emancipation of women.
Direh however stressed the need for gender equality in politics for women to enable them be effectively instrument in national building.

Kalabari Media Forum Hails Recognition Of Dokubo Asari As Amayanabo
The Kalabari Media Forum has endorsed the recognition of Alabo, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo Asari as the Amayanabo of Torusarama Piri and the historical relevance of the award.
A communique issued after the 2024 end of year summit of the Forum also commends the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminialaye Joseph Fubara for the recognition which they described as the best end of year gift to the Kalabari people.
The Communique signed by the Coordinator of the Forum, Alabo Dagogo Clinton and the Secretary, Mr. Harry Awolayeofori Macmorrison states that the gesture should make the Kalabari people to get back to the drawing board and consolidate on existing inter and intra communal peace within the region.
According to the statement, Torusarama Piri was the first place where the founding fathers of Kalabari converged from different cultures, tribes and backgrounds. Adding that those saying that the Kalabari people are not united should think again.
” As the different founding fathers were able to form a formidable ethnic nationality, modern day Kalabari should be able to sink the differences between the constituent communities and with other non-Kalabari speaking neighbours to achieve the needed internal cohesion for development”. It states.
The Forum further congratulated Alabo Asari Dokubo on his recognition and urged him to use the opportunity to do even more for the Kalabari people and Rivers State as a whole.
According to the statement, the Forum is happy with the recognition of Dokubo Asari not because he is one of the patrons of the Forum, but because he is about the most Kalabari-centric figure living, who has also committed enormous resources for the protection of the Kalabari people.
They urged the Kalabari Se Kobiri and the entire people of the ethnic nationality to work with Alabo Dokubo Asari and put to rest speculations about Kalabari that some persons have exploited against the interest of the Kalabari people over the years.
