Farmers Urge Support For Jonathan
All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Delta has urged Nigerians to give President Goodluck Jonathan maximum support to enable him to take Nigeria to the promised land.
The Chairman of Delta branch of AFAN, Chief Gerry Osai, who made the call in Asaba in an interview with newsmen, said that Jonathan’s success as the flagbearer of the PDP for the April presidential election would depend on the people’s and other political parties’ support.
Osai said that Jonathan represented a good alternative to the past leaders because he has programmes that could take the country to a greater height.
He said: “At least, we know he is not greedy and we know also that he has some vision and plan that could take us to somewhere.
“With the support of all Nigerians, he stands a good chance to win because for the first time we have a minority on the saddle.
“If he is able to articulate his programmes properly, he will get good following.”
Commenting on the candidature of Prof. Pat Utomi, the flagbearer of the Social Democratic Mega Party (SDMP) , Osai said Nigeria was not ripe for his ilk.
Osai said: “He has grandiose ideas that can move this nation forward, but you see Nigeria cannot be fast tracked to the level of his own dream.
“We are still groping in the dark, but Utomi has seen the light. And it takes long walk for a man who is groping in the dark to see the same thing.
“In terms of world politics, he is the type of person we want.
“But the realities of Nigeria today is that many Nigerians don’t understand what he is talking about when he is articulating his programmes,” he added.
He said that Nigerians would mature over time for Utomi’s kind of leadership when they become more educated and the people get more jobs and the realities of world economics dawned on us.
“But for now, I think we should give Jonathan a chance to succeed,’’ Osai said.
The AFAN chief said the president should give priority education to salvage the country’s educational system.
“The foundation of any nation is education; our education has gone to the dogs and as such, it needs urgent attention.
“Secondly, we need to address agriculture, because a well fed man is a healthy man. If our country is healthy, we will reduce money being spent on the health system.
“And thirdly, infrastructure, electricity and roads, among others, need to be fixed to enhance industrial growth and create new jobs for the unemployed,’’ Osai said.
