Institute Seeks Intervention On Use Of Local Technologies
The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Zaria, has appealed to the Federal Government to create the enabling environment for the mass production of its research products and technologies.
Prof. Balarabe Tanimu, the Director of the institute, made the appeal on Thursday in Zaria , Kaduna State, while fielding questions from newsmen.
Tanimu said such initiative would not only enhance mass production, but would also generate employment opportunities for the teeming unemployed citizens.
He pledged that the institute would work assiduously on relevant technologies and engage in research to complement government’s efforts to attain the objectives of Vision 20:2020.
He said several prototype machines had been developed in the institute over the years.
“Our team of engineers had over the years, successfully designed and constructed prototype machines for the threshing of sorghum and millet.
”Also, a prototype machine for ridge planting of cereals was constructed. Both prototype machines are currently undergoing extensive evaluation for optimum performance.
”This is with a view to reducing drudgery in agricultural production and processing of farm products,” he said.
The director said the institute had developed the ‘IAR solar dryer’ which was introduced to tomato farmers to curtail the heavy losses they experience.
According to him, the institute last year, successfully carried out the demonstration of the use of a “life-size energy-saving Tomato Forced Conservation Dryer” at Kwanan-Gafan, Kano State.
He said that several farmers in the area showed interest in the technology.
The director further said that the institute had taken some “bold” steps to assist farmers affected by flood, drought and lead poisoning in states within its jurisdiction.
According to him, last year, the institute dispatched some experts to carry out surveys of the affected areas with a view to recommending practical solutions address the challenges.
He said that the efforts of the institute were aimed at alleviating the plight of farmers.
