Delta Speaker Tasks Media On Agenda Setting
The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Mr Victor Ochei, Wednesday urged media professionals to meet the aspirations of Nigerians in their agenda setting role.
He gave the charge at the inaugural lecture and launch of the N50 million recreation centre by the Pointer Newspapers Chapel of NUJ in Asaba.
The lecture with the theme “National Security and Vision 20:2020: The Role of the Media” was delivered by the Guest Lecturer, Mr Ken Olise, to mark the chapel’s 2011 Week.
Ochei, who was represented by his Special Assistant, Dr Ken Emina, said that the media held the key to bringing the expected change and keeping the hope of the people alive in this democratic era.
“I dare to say that the role of the media should be that of agenda setting. Members of the mass media must continue to lead the way for others to follow.
“It therefore follows that the media must seek and report the truth at all times not in attempt to destroy but to build,’’ he said.
He said that journalists were faced with the challenge of dismantling the culture of impunity, adding that it was a terrible virus that sapped the vitality of moral living of the professionals.
“It is the culture of impunity that makes the journalist to deviate from seeking the truth. It is the culture of impunity that encourages kidnapping and armed brigandage and creates the bastardisation of religion,’’he said.
Ochei said that the state Assembly was committed to making laws that would impact positively on the lives of the people.
“As your representatives, we know your desires, your expectations of us and we shall meet those positive expectations,”he promised.
He commended the leadership of the chapel for coming up with such laudable initiative and a lecture to educate the public.
The Chairman of the chapel, Mr Fidelis Egugbo who described the event as historic, said the fund raised would usher in concrete development in the NUJ family.
“The fund we hope to raise as earlier stated will be utilised to erect a permanent recreation centre in the Pointer permanent premises.
“The centre will have office accommodation, restaurants and a multipurpose hall which will also serve as crèche for nursing mothers,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Biose Iweobi, General Manager, Pointer, represented by the Assistant General Manger, Mr Ken Mordi, commended the organisers of the programme for their initiatives.
He said that the management would continue to support workers friendly programmes, adding that welfare of the workers was important to the management.
