Minister Wants Doctors In Rural Areas
Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu, has directed the management of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) to deploy medical doctors on rotational basis to the rural areas.
The Minister gave the directive in Calabar last Friday when he inspected health facilities at the UCTH.
He also warned medical personnel who refused such postings to seek employment elsewhere “because the ministry will not tolerate such attitude”.
Chukwu added that the policy was intended to get tertiary health services to the grassroots.
He expressed Federal Government’s concern over the attitude of some public service health workers in the country, saying
they were known for embarking on incessant strikes.
The minister said the ministry was determined to prosecute any health personnel on its payroll who allowed patients to suffer hardships or death under the pretext of being on strike.
He advised the UCTH’s management to utilise critical staff for its services and avoid employing irrelevant personnel for its operations.
Earlier, the Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Prof. Thomas Agan, urged the minister to assist the hospital in improving its capital allocation to enable it to complete outstanding projects.
Agan appealed to the minister to direct the Procurement Unit of the ministry to allocate 500 beds and mattresses to the hospital “because most beds in use there had out lived their usefulness”.
The minister had visited the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital where he inaugurated a clinical block to accommodate the pharmacy laboratory, medical records, consulting rooms, consultant offices, emergency units and the sick bay, among others.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Joseph Okegbe, said it would continue in the pursuit of excellence in the provision of mental health services to the public.
