RSG To Check Illegal Markets In Port Harcourt
The Rivers State Government says it is ready to enforce the relevant sections of the state laws against the proliferation of illegal markets in Port Harcourt City and its environs.
The Chairman Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority (RSESA), Mr. Isoboye Jack, who said this during the demolition of illegal markets and shanties in Port Harcourt, also said that the Authority is in the process of constituting a committee to monitor the proliferation of illegal structures in the City.
Mr. Jack also said that the Authority would ensure that those defacing the City of Port Harcourt and its environs were tried and prosecuted in line with the laws of the state.
“The reason behind this is very straight forward. You can see that Port Harcourt is generally turning to be a market place and what we are doing now is to make sure that illegal markets and street trading were not carried out in Port Harcourt”, he said.
He maintained that the demolition exercise which started Monday, would cover the whole of Port Harcourt including Obio/Akpor, Eleme and Oyigbo Local Government Areas.
According to him, those affected in the various places had been notified and directed to vacate the affected sites.
The exercise which started from the Garrison Bus Stop to Akpajo in Eleme Local Government Area affected more than five hundred illegal structures.
