Group Appeals For Healthcare Facility In Kono
An appeal has gone to the State government to establish a functional healthcare delivery facility in Kono Town, Khana Local Government Area.
The call was made by a non-governmental organisation, the Kono Progressive Association (KPA) at the end of a two-day medical outreach organised by the association in Kono recently.
President of the Association, Mr. Godwin Barisua Nwiwuga said that the call became necessary because the only medical facility in the area is a yet to be completed Cottage hospital which the state government started about 15 years ago, adding that the people of the area go through some difficulties in accessing medicare when the need arises.
“The only Cottage Hospital started by the Rivers State government in Kono, Khana Local government Area (KHALGA) over 15 years ago has not been completed for use and it has been covered by weeds and taken over by wild animals”, he noted.
Nwiwuga pleaded with the state government to have another look at the facility by renovating it and posting medical personnel to the hospital.
This, according to him would go a long way to alleviating the sufferings being faced by the people of the community due to lack of medical attention.
He explained that the nearest hospital is in Bori, the headquarters of KHALGA which is more than 16 kilometres away from Kono and as a result many have lost their lives to illnesses that could easily be treated if given immediate medical attention.
The KPA boss also commended Governor Chibuike Amaechi for his developmental strides in the state and prayed God to continue to give him the strength and wisdom to pilot the affairs of the state.
On the just concluded outreach, the KPA President said the association did not only focus on medical outreach for the community but gifts and food items for the less privileged and a generating set for pumping water.
He also disclosed that the Association intends to make the outreach a routine programme as the cardinal objective of the association is serving humanity.
KPA is a socio-cultural organisation established in 1983 with the aims of projecting the image of Kono, preserving and promoting its cultural heritage, creating social awareness among youths and executing developmental projects in the area inter alia.
