Polio Campaign: Phalga Partners Governors’ Forum
The Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council, Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo has pledged his council partnership with the Nigerian Governors Forum for the success of the third phase immunisation programme in the city.
Hon. Akarolo who said this at the weekend, while flagging off the programmme at the Elekahia Primary Health Centre in Port Harcourt, said that the council will leave no stone unturned towards ensuring the success of the programme.
The mayor said that, as part of measures towards this, health officers have been directed to ensure door to door immunisation throughout Port Harcourt City and its environs.
He thanked the people for their massive turn out for the immunisation programme and urged them to assist the council in spreading the information across to the people.
The mayor, in the company of other dignitaries at the occasion, later administered oral polio vaccines to a number of children at the occasion.
Also speaking, the health officer in charge of the Elekahia Health Centre, Dr. T.J. Tanu decried that Nigeria has continue to remain behind in polio eradication, as new cases are developing every day.
Dr Tanu said that, Nigeria can stop the virus, if the people are ready to avail themselves of the opportunities provided by regular immunization exercises.
Also speaking, the immediate caretaker committee chairman of the city council, Hon. Kingsley Ohonda said that 700 youths have been trained for the door to door immunisation programme in the city.
Hon Ohonda who is also the president of the Phalga chapter of Ikwerre Youth Movement (IYM) urged the various community leaders in the area to educate their people on the need to ensure mass participation in the immunisation exercise.
