Monarch Wants EFCC To Probe Erosion Contracts Award
The Otaru of Auchi, Alhaji Aliru Momoh, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the alleged contracts awarded to address the gully erosion in the area even as he called on Federal Government to declare Auchi an “erosion disaster area”.
Momoh, who made the call while addressing journalists in his palace, expressed regrets that the erosion had brought untold hardship to the people in recent years.
According to him, not only has the erosion destroyed properties estimated at billions of naira but several lives have also been lost to the menace.
The monarch alleged that successive administration politick with the erosion menace in the area.
He noted that the people now live in fears as the rains approaches because “we do not know what will happen next.
“We are also not sure whose house or property will be destroyed by the erosion. Even our lives are not secure.
“Relevant government agencies from Abuja and even the World Bank have come to do assessment of the erosion several times but the problem still persists.
“Nothing has been done about it,” he noted.
He noted that during the short administration of Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor in 2007, World Bank team came and did an assessment of Auchi gully erosion and that of Queen Ede in Benin.
He pointed out that based on the assessment, World Bank gave 20 million dollars to address the problem.
The monarch urged the EFCC to investigate the alleged contracts awarded in the past in respect of the Auchi erosion problem and so many others across the country.
“As for Auchi gully erosion problem, it has been one contract after another, taking away money and doing nothing.
“The EFCC should visit the ministry of environment and see files on Auchi erosion.”
Reacting to the allegations, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Clem Agba, told newsmen that he was not aware of any release of fund by the World Bank.
