Lawmakers To Probe Special Duties Ministry Over Neglect
Rivers State House of Assembly has directed its Judiciary committee that investigated the unfortunate fire incident at Igwuruta, in Ikwerre Local Government Area to continue with the assignment and ascertain how budgetary appropriations to the Ministry of Special Duties were expended.
This was sequel to the debate on the report on the Igwuruta fire presented by the chairman of the committee, Hon. Golden Chioma, which raised some issues that needs further clarification.
Ruling on the resolutions of the House, the Deputy Speaker Hon. Leyii Kwanee who presided over the House proceeding for Wednesday directed the Judiciary Committee to interface with the Commissioner for Special Duties including the immediate past Commissioner to ascertain the cause of the lapses leading to a fire service truck getting to a scene of an incident with no headlights, no water and functional equipment to do their job.
Hon. Kwanee also told the committee to liaise with the state Commissioner of Police to sanction the Igwuruta Divisional Police Officer (DPO) on the role he played during the incident and to cause the owner of the truck Jaspino Oil to provide some succur to the victims of the incident.
The House equally resolved that the committee should liase with the Ikwerre Council chairman to ensure that relief materials get to the disaster victims.
Golden Chioma representing Etche Constituency 11, urged the House to compel every local government council to have a functional fire service station and advised that the Igwuruta market should be relocated to a better site to avoid another fatality in future.
In his contribution, member representing Emohua and Leader of the House Hon. Chidi Lloyd described the Igwuruta fire incident as pitiable and demanded to know where the funds approved for the Ministry of Special duties by the Assembly are expended on if the fire truck can go to fire scene without water.
He condemned the attitude of state fire fighters that complain regularly of lack of equipment, when the office receive funds to carry out their duties and called for the summoning of the commissioner for questioning.
Hon. Ikuinyi Ibani, Andoni, Lucky Odili, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Constituency 11, Hon. Azubuike Wanjoku, Ikwerre, all spoke in favour of the report and called on the state government to descentralise fire service stations for quick intervention to distress calls.

NASS Sets Date For 2025 Budget Passage
Chairman, Senate committee on appropriations, Sen. Solomon Adeola, stated this on Monday in Abuja at a meeting with the chairmen of standing committees in the Senate.
According to him, Jan. 31 is the date for laying of reports on the appropriation bill before the Senate and the House of Representatives.
He said upon resumption from Christmas and New Year break on Jan. 14, both chambers of the national assembly would suspend plenary for two weeks for budget defence by ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
Sen. Adeola also said that NASS had fixed Jan. 9 for an open day on the budget to enable various stakeholders, aside heads of MDAs, to make inputs on the budget.
“A tentative time table has been drawn for consideration of the budget at committee level.
“Budget defence sessions begin from Jan. 7, while reports from various committees are expected to be submitted from 15th to 18th of this month.
“Afterwards, collation and tidying up of the various reports will be done by the appropriation committee, with the hope of laying final report on the budget at the Senate on 31st of this month.
“However, the 31st of January fixed for laying of the budget is tentative, as it is just given to guide our work,” he said.
The principal officers of the Senate who attended the meeting included: the Deputy Leader, Sen. Lola Ashiru and Senate Whip, Sen. Tahir Monguno.
They said that the timeframe for consideration and passage of the 2025 budget by the national assembly was short.
They, however, expressed hope on the timely passage of the budget.
The committee, thereafter, went into a closed door session with chairmen of the various standing committees in the Senate.
