Rivers Youths Protest Over Buhari’s Statement
A group of Rivers youths under the aegies of Concerned Rivers Youths, have condemned in strong terms the recent statement by the presidential candidate of Congress for Progressive Change in 2011 general elections, Major Muhammadu Buhari that Nigeria would witness bloodbath if the 2015 elections are rigged.
The Group which staged a peaceful protest march along major streets of Port Harcourt last Tuesday said the statement of the former Head of State was inflammatory and capable of heating up the polity, especially now that there are major security challenges in the Northern part of the country.
They however called on Nigerians to disregard such threat of violence, as the group has explicit confidence in the ability of President Goodluck Jonathan to conduct free, fair and credible election in 2015, adding that the 2011 general elections he conducted was adjudged the freest and fairest election in the history of Nigeria.
The group however pledged their unalloyed loyalty and support for the Jonathan-led administration in the country, and called on General Buhari to withdraw his statement of threat in the interest of the unity of Nigeria, stressing that the unity of Nigeria is sacrosanct and non-negotiable.
Briefing newsmen during the protest march, a leader of the group and President of Rivers Unright Movement (RUM), Comrade Biokpo George said the unity of the country should not be sacrified on the altar of personal ambition of General Buhari, adding “Nigeria as an entity is far greater and bigger than any one single individual and we must all say no to disunity and bloodshed”.
Comrade George, who described President Jonathan as a man of peace that needs the support of all Nigerians to achieve the Nigeria of our dream, said Nigerians should expect a far better election in 2015, saying that they should disregard or shun any call for violence and bloodshed by a former military junta whose regime was noted for human rights abuses and intolerance of the freedom of expression.
