RSG Plans New Waste Management Scheme
A new waste management system is underway in Rivers State.
Secretary to the State Government, Mr George Feyii gave the indication while responding to questions during a two-day State Peer Review Mechanism workshop organised by the State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, in collaboration with the Nigeria Governor’s Forum(NGF) held in Port Harcourt, recently.
Feyii said the new waste management will make Port Harcourt cleaner and better to do business in.
He observed that government was not satisfied with the current sanitation status of the city hence the need to evolve a new scheme that will be efficient and better.
The Rivers State Government scribe further asserted,” the new thinking is a holistic approach that is going to be adopted. We have to manage the situation for a while until it is concluded ‘’.
Dispelling the view that government has relaxed in monitoring contractors handling its projects, Feyii maintained that it is untrue, adding that government is not lax on achieving its infrastructural development objective.
He also used the forum to clear the State Government’s stance on the poor state of the East-West Road now under construction. Feyii argued that as a federal road, there is little the state government can do, recalling that earlier the government had wanted Setraco to fasten the pace of work from the Mbiama axis down since the area is in bad shape.
He explained that despite pleas by the authorities, the contractor had remained adamant, but praised RCC for almost completing the Ogoni axis of the federal road.
Feyii also stated that the State Government had started constructing car parks in various part of the metropolis to check vehicular traffic, expressing the hope that such parks will encourage private investment.
Meanwhile, Director of Strategy and Research of the NGF, Alhaji Lot Shittu has lauded Rivers State for scaling the first phase of the peer review mechanism, while stressing that,” “we expect the state to even do more’’.
