Mrs Amaechi Charts Path For Women
Wife of Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi has canvassed for a holistic policy for sustainable empowerment of women in Nigeria
Mrs. Amaechi made the call while unveiling report tagged, ‘’ Women Needs and Impact Assessment’’ at Government House, Port Harcourt.
She reasoned that inconsistency in policy implementation was the bane of women empowerment programme in the country.
According to her, “it is really pertinent that we conduct a proper research on people, have enough background on their peculiarity and design a programme in that direction that will meet their yearnings and aspirations.’’
The Governor’s wife disclosed that the assessment put together by the Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with a nongovernmental organisation, the Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI), would provide platform of pursuing women’s need in the various local government areas of the State with a view to finding lasting solution to their problems.
Mrs. Amaechi further stated that the research had become necessary in order to evolve a blue print for addressing development challenges amongst women especially in the rural communities.
She called on government at all levels to initiate holistic approach in proffering sustainable empowerment scheme for women in the country.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Joeba West said the absence of such developmental blueprint for women was responsible for the lull in her Ministry’s activities adding that with the recent report, the ministry now has a clear-cut direction for women.
She pledged that the ministry will implement the report and recommendation of the research work.
In his speech, the Administrator of ESI, Mr. Nowa Omorogbe stated that empowerment for women has gone beyond lip service and added that the NGO will be willing to provide other related service geared towards alleviating the plight of women and the down trodden.
