The World Bank has provided 272,236 communities in Kebbi State with access to social and natural resources infrastructure in one year under a community and social development project.
The Chairman of the Board of the Project, Alhaji Umar Ahmed, told newsmen in Birnin Kebbi last Saturday that 126,000 rural dwellers now had access to safe water supply, with “64 per cent of them being women”.
He said 27,000 other rural dwellers had access to environmental and natural resources that had improved their standards of living.
He said that 68,314 people have access to safe water supply projects,“and the distance to water sources had reduced from two kilometres to 0.5 kilometres, and time spent fetching water reduced from 74 minutes to 30 minutes”.
“The cost of water and incidence of water borne disease also reduced by 66 per cent and 97 per cent, respectively, while 1,378 boys and 764 girls enrolled into schools with over 80 per cent retention.
“The distance covered to schools reduced from five kilometres to one kilometre, time spent reduced from 90 minutes to 30 minutes, and the project had recruited and trained 60 teachers posted to schools.”
Ahmed said that 21,497 females and 10,057 males have increased access to health care delivery and 1,376 women attended ante-natal and post natal clinics, while 2,427 children were immunised against killer diseases.
“In the environment and natural resources sector 54 households were assisted to establish agro-forestry farms, while in the sanitation sector 16,350 pupils have access to use of modern toilets”, he added.
He said the project had trained local government staff on capacity building and five people from each benefiting community on handling of the clinics and dispensaries to accelerate the utilisation and functionality of health facilities.
The Tide source reports that the project provided 90 per cent of the N690.1 million, while the benefiting communities contributed 10 per cent of the cost, representing N69 million for the completion of 216 micro development projects.
