FRSC Cautions Parents On Children’s Safety
The Federal Road Safety
Corps (FRSC) in Edo State has urged parents to take responsibility for the safety of their children and wards, both at home and on the road.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Luka Ikpi, said this in Benin during a news conference to mark the 2014 UN Road Safety Week.
The Theme of the 3rd UN Road Safety Week, holding from April 23 to April 27, is “Keeping Children Safe on the Road”.
Ikpi disclosed that about 1.3 million people died annually from road crashes, with about 50 million others injured world-wide.
He said that 80 per cent of the crashes occurred in the low- income and middle-income countries, with Nigeria as one of such countries.
Ikpi said that statistics available to the FRSC showed that many children got involved in road traffic accidents, which resulted from different factors.
He noted that parents had an important role to play in ensuring that the number of children who got involved in road accidents was reduced.
“When in a vehicle, some parents carelessly leave their children at the back seat to play about and the children may ignorantly open the door, which could result in an accident.
“When driving, some parents carry their children on their laps or on the front seat without seat belts and when there is a crash, the children are affected.
“It is also a known fact that some parents leave their children to play games or football on the road and are crushed by vehicles.
“The FRSC believes in catching them young and has come up with various initiatives such as ‘Road Safety Club’ in primary and post-primary schools.
“We have gone a step further to introduce road safety in the school curriculum.
“We believe that these measures will go a long way to saving the lives of the young ones who are the leaders of tomorrow,” Ikpi added.
