A Health Safety and
Environment (HSE) export in Rivers State Mr. Vincent Akpu has called for the inclusion of Safety and Environment related courses in educational curricula in the country.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after his investiture as fellow the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) during its 33rd annual professionals development conference in Port Harcourt, Mr. Akpu who has a 22 years experience in HSE in the oil and gas industry also urged governments at all levels to invest in the Health Safety and Environment (HSE) sector of the country.
According to him, governments at all levels must see safety as a priority, noting that without safety no society can move forward.
Mr. Akpu expressed delight over the Fellowship award conferred by the institute, saying it shows that one is being recognized by his own people.
“In 2009, I was made “Fellow of one of the largest safety institute in the world, that is the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) of the Uk.
“It gives me joy that few years after, I am being honoured in my own country Nigeria”, he said.
Earlier, the National President of Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Dr. Nnamdi Ilobi Uba said that membership of the Institute was open to all those who were prepared to serve with integrity honour and dignity.
“Today, there may exist several institutions in this country, but we have been given the mandate by an instrument of law, endorsed by the President of the Federal republic of Nigeria.
“There were times when anybody could claim to be safety professional and Employer of labour were more concerned with payments for compensation rather than the prevention of accidents.
“But these ills have now been corrected by our institute”, he said.
