WPSN Wants End To Violence
Women in Peace And
Security Network(WPSN) has raised its voice against all manner of violence in the society.
In a peaceful walk in port Harcourt recently, facilitated by Gender And development Action(GADA), the group preached peace as a worthy alternative to violence especially as at concerns election into political offices.
The group which consists of various non-government organizations walked through the streets of port Harcourt displaying placards that condemn violence in its entirety.
Speaking in one of the stopovers during the walk, the Director of Gender And Development Action(GADA), Susan Bassey-Duke, harped on the imperativeness of peace, stressing that women need peace to exercise their franchise as well as carry out their legitimate duties as care providers of homes.
According to Susan, it ie important that women champion moves against violence because they understand the implications of violence and victims of such.
The GADA programme Director said although women are known as the vulnerable group and are disadvantaged at every point and time, they have strength due to their numerical advantage which can hardly be challenged.
Meanwhile, the bishop of the King’s Chapel Niger Delta Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Ralph Ebirien, has commended the women for peace walk. The Bishop, who made the commendation when the group stopped over at his church,. Said the Church of Nigeria, Anglican communion also preaches against for which reason they pray for peace in the state and nation always.
In the same vein, the electoral officer in charge of Port Harcourt Local Government, Joseph Elemson, while commending the women for what he described as a bold step against violence, urged them to use their influence as women to preach the same message of peace to their various families, neighborhood and communities.
It will be recalled that the peace walk which took off from the premises of the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation, ended at the king’s chapel, Niger Delta Diocese of the Anglican Communion with stopovers at the state secretariat of The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Port Harcourt, the Port Harcourt Local Government office of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), The secretariat of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council and the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress(APC).
