ICRC’s Neutrality, Key In Chibok Girls’ Release – Mosinmann
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has said that its core values of neutrality, objectivity, confidentiality and humanitarianism are the key factors that facilitated the release of the 103 Chibok schoolgirls.
The Tide recalls that ICRC had facilitated the negotiation and coordinated the release of the first batch of 21 and second batch of 82 Chibok schoolgirls abducted from Chibok by Boko Haram terrorists on April 14, 2014.
The ICRC Communications Coordinator in Nigeria, Mrs Aleksandra Matijevic Mosinmann, stated this in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, on the sidelines of an event organised by the Rivers State branch of ICRC to mark World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day and exhibition of photo shots by some youth of Prison Waterfront at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt.
She explained that the peaceful release of the Chibok schoolgirls after a well coordinated negotiation was as a result of the fact that the insurgents already had confidence in the organisation’s neutrality, impartiality, integrity and reputation for being trustworthy and confidential third party intermediary in conflict and war situations, globally.
Mosinmann stated that after a successful negotiation and handing over of the girls to the Federal government, the parents of the girls have expressed joy and happiness that their children have been released to reunite safely with them after three years in captivity.
She stressed that, everyone was excited over the recent release and return of the 82 girls, to be reunited with their families, saying that, as soon as the girls knew that they were free from the insurgents’ captivity, and would soon reunite with their families, they sang without ceasing.
The communications expert emphasised that ICRC was only involved in the operation and facilitation of the release and return of the girls as a neutral intermediary, insisting that ICRC officials were able to get the girls from the terrorists after peaceful talks, and handed them over to the government without any hitches.
The communication coordinator hinted that, the operation process took ICRC two days, from Saturday, May 6 and was finalised in the early hours of Sunday, May 7, 2017.
