C’River Youth Hold Rally Over Federal University, Ogoja Bill
Cross River State youths at the weekend staged a rally during which they appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the bill establishing the Federal University of Technology, Ogoja.
The bill was passed by the 8th National Assembly.
The youths, who held the rally under the aegis of the Greater Ogoja Development Initiative, expressed the fear that the bill would be of no effect if not signed immediately.
Team Leader of Greater Ogoja Development Initiative, Mr Mike Udam, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, said that the “passionate rally” was aimed at appealing to Buhari to endorse the bill to enhance access to quality education in Ogoja and environs.
Udam commended Mr Jarigbe Agom, who represented Ogoja/Yala constituentcy in the 8th National Assembly, for sponsoring the bill for the establishment of the university and described the feat as “historical”.
He said that people of the northern fringes of the Ogoja Province, currently configured into Bekwarra, Obanliku, Obudu, Ogoja and Yala Local Government Areas, were yearning for the actualisation of the university.
“Ogoja people are compelled to request for the establishment of a university of technology given the Federal Government’s disposition toward science and technology in the country.
“Ogoja was promised a university since 1975 but the dream evaporated over a minor disagreement between communities. Such issues have been resolved and we are united in the quest to have the school,” he said.
Udam pleaded with Buhari to grant the request of Ogoja people by assenting to the bill to offer greater opportunities for people seeking higher education in the area.
