Senate Investigates Syringe Manufacture, Importation
The Senate has directed its committees on Health, Trade and Investment and Customs to investigate the manufacture, importation and policy guidelines for syringe and needles in the country.
Consequently, the committees are to invite the Federal Ministries of Health, Trade and Investment, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and manufacturers of syringe and needles during their investigation.
These resolutions were sequel to a motion sponsored by Sen. Ibrahim Oloriegbe (APC-Kwara) and co-sponsored by Sen. Sadiq Suleiman (APC-Kwara) during plenary, yesterday.
The upper chamber also directed the Ministry of Health to provide explanation on the policy for the procurement and utilisation of syringe and needles by federal, state and private hospitals and agencies of the ministry.
The motion is tagged; “The need to regulate the manufacturing, importation and use of syringes and needles to protect the lives and safety of Nigerians as well as the economy of the country.”
Olorigbe, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, said that syringes and needles were essential medical products used for the administration of drugs parentally to save human lives.
He said that the syringes if not sterilised and of the right quality, the use of the syringes and needles could cause disease and even death to the patient.
According to him, investment in the manufacturing of syringes and needles was estimated to be about N64 billion with a potential market value of about N100 billion that could be created locally, engaging about 3, 000 Nigerians directly.
“Certified and approved local manufactures of syringes and needles in Nigeria by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have the capacity to produce 1.6 billion units per annum.
“In spite of this capacity, an estimated over 1 billion units per annum of syringes and needles are being imported into the country, making the country to lose huge foreign exchange.”
He expressed concern that in spite of the introduction of 75 per cent import duties on imported syringes and needles, the customs department was not enforcing this.
“The Federal Ministry of Health does not have an effective policy on the procurement and utilisation of syringe and needles by the federally-owned hospitals and agencies.”
The motion was supported by Senators Sadiq Suleiman (APC-Kwara) and Chimaroke Nnamani (PDP-Enugu).

NASS Sets Date For 2025 Budget Passage
Chairman, Senate committee on appropriations, Sen. Solomon Adeola, stated this on Monday in Abuja at a meeting with the chairmen of standing committees in the Senate.
According to him, Jan. 31 is the date for laying of reports on the appropriation bill before the Senate and the House of Representatives.
He said upon resumption from Christmas and New Year break on Jan. 14, both chambers of the national assembly would suspend plenary for two weeks for budget defence by ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
Sen. Adeola also said that NASS had fixed Jan. 9 for an open day on the budget to enable various stakeholders, aside heads of MDAs, to make inputs on the budget.
“A tentative time table has been drawn for consideration of the budget at committee level.
“Budget defence sessions begin from Jan. 7, while reports from various committees are expected to be submitted from 15th to 18th of this month.
“Afterwards, collation and tidying up of the various reports will be done by the appropriation committee, with the hope of laying final report on the budget at the Senate on 31st of this month.
“However, the 31st of January fixed for laying of the budget is tentative, as it is just given to guide our work,” he said.
The principal officers of the Senate who attended the meeting included: the Deputy Leader, Sen. Lola Ashiru and Senate Whip, Sen. Tahir Monguno.
They said that the timeframe for consideration and passage of the 2025 budget by the national assembly was short.
They, however, expressed hope on the timely passage of the budget.
The committee, thereafter, went into a closed door session with chairmen of the various standing committees in the Senate.
