Neighbourhood Corps Boss Tasks Residents On Security
Following the high rate of insecurity in the country, residents of the State have been told to view security as everyone’s business.
Speaking during a courtesy call by members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State Chapter, Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency, Mr Uche Mike Chukwuma, urged residents of the State to report suspicious movements in their vicinity.
Chukwuma stated that it was the duty of everybody to secure their environment, noting that with useful information from the public, the high rate of insecurity can be effectively addressed.
Chukwuma regretted that some media houses had compromised the tenets of journalism profession for pecuniary benefits and urged them to desist from such habits which smacks betrayal of trust, adding that he has high regards for journalists for what they stand for, and represent in the society.
He said journalism profession existed to amplify the voice of the people and constitute a vanguard against societal ills and advised practitioners not to be used by selfish politicians.
He also blamed speculative and unbalanced reportage on some policemen who refused to avail journalists of the required information.
He called on journalists to down play issues capable of destroying the society as well as quoting people out of context.
“What we need is love, trust, cooperation and confidence, these are what the neigh-bourhood enjoyed since they came on board.”
The Director General assured that soonest, the agency would partner with NUJ, NAWOJ, and other professional bodies, towards achieving the philosophy of community policing which according to him required commitment and passion.
In decrying lack of employment in the country, and it’s attendant negative effects, Mr Chukwuma thanked the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, for signing the Neighb-ourhood Safety Corps Bill into law on 15 March 2018, noting that despite all attacks, the agency is functional.
Earlier, the Chairperson, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State Chapter, Madam Susan Serekara-Nwikhana stated that the purpose of the courtesy visit was to seek for partnership with the agency.
Nwikhana appealed to the agency to create a press unit as well as a gender desk that would give voice and address the needs of women in the agency.
