Stakeholder Warns Against Effects Of Artisanal Refining In N’Delta
A stakeholder in the Niger Delta region and the Regional Coordinator for Artisanal Refining, Fineface Dunamene, has called on the Federal Government to modify artisanal refining and save the region of environmental hazards.
He said that the failure by the Federal Government to modify artisanal refinning and stop environmental degradation might result in massive loss of lives in the region.
He expressed fear that a time would come when there will be a Niger Delta region without the Niger Delta people, unless urgent action is taken to modify the antisanal refining.
Dunamene who disclosed this while interacting with journalists at the weekend in Port Harcourt, noted that the environmental effects of the pollution arising from artisanal refineries are greater than the gains of the operations.
“I have been undertaking a research on the activities and operations of artisanal refining in the Niger Delta for 10 years now, and I have found out that the effect of pollution is greater than the gains of the refining.
“If the Federal Government does not intervene by upgrading artisanal refining to the modular refining it promised, a time will come when we will have the Niger Delta without the people due to pollution.
“Right now, we have a situation where farmers and fishermen are suffering in their businesses because of pollution, while the operators of the artisanal refineries smile to the bank.
“Modular refineries are expensive to establish or build, and those operating the artisanal refineries cannot afford it, except they are sponsored.
“All we want now is for the Federal Government to give licence for the modular refineries, because there are investors who will be willing to invest in it, and this will generate revenue to the government, and create good employment for the youths.
“Modular refinery has the capacity to produce 1,000 to 30,000 barrels per day, and can employ 10,000 workers, while regular refinery can produce 30,000 barrels per day and above,” he said.
Dunamene, however, urged all stakeholders, particularly the multinationals and government agencies to come together towards ensuring that the Presidential Artisanal Crude Oil Refining Development Initiative (PACORDI) is realised.
He hinted of a pan to host a workshop on modular refineries in Port Harcourt in June in collaboration with foreign technical partners from the United Kingdom whom he said are ready to provide greater percentage of funds to run the modular refineries.
