#COP26: Buhari Pledges Net Zero Emissions By 2060

Published

on

President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged that Nigeria would cut its emissions to net zero by 2060.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said Buhari made this known while delivering his statement at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
According to Shehu, “The President said that attaining national and global climate change goals will require adequate and sustained technical and financial support to developing countries.
“He said greater effort should be channelled towards assisting developing nations to meet their ‘‘Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) commitments through the pledges made by the developed countries to provide at least $100billion yearly’.
“President Buhari noted that easier access to climate finance had become imperative in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, which really battered the economies of developing countries.”
He quoted Buhari as saying, ‘‘I do not think anyone in Nigeria needs persuading of the need for urgent action on the environment.
‘‘Desertification in the North, floods in the centre, pollution and erosion on the coast are enough evidence.
‘‘For Nigeria, climate change is not about the perils of tomorrow but what is happening today. Nigeria is committed to net zero by 2060.’’
Shehu said the President made a case for gas-based energy transition in Nigeria, and requested international partners to finance projects using transition fuels such as gas.
He quoted Buhari as saying, ‘‘Parties to the Paris Agreement are expected to transit from fossil fuel to clean energy and reach a Net Zero ambition for greenhouse gases emission.
‘‘Nigeria is actually more of a gas than an oil producing country.
‘‘Consequently, I am requesting for financing of projects using transition fuels, such as gas.
‘‘Nigeria has energy challenges for which, we believe, gas can be used to balance a renewable energy-based system, be it wind or sun.
‘‘This would enable us launch the long-term renewable energy infrastructure procurements and investments needed to have a sustainable energy supply.’’
According to Shehu, “Acknowledging that net zero ambition can lead to economic transformation across all sectors, the Nigerian leader said it would require critical infrastructure to be in place.
“President Buhari also told the COP26 Leaders’ Summit that Nigeria has developed a detailed energy transition plan and roadmap based on data and evidence.
“He explained that the plan has highlighted some key facts that force the difficult conversations.”
Buhari said, ‘‘Our transition plan also highlights the key role that gas will play in transitioning our economy across sectors, and the data and evidence show that Nigeria can continue to use gas until 2040 without detracting from the goals of the Paris Agreement.
‘‘Gas will be key for addressing the clean cooking challenge, which is also a challenge of deforestation, and for giving our electric grid the stability and flexibility to integrate renewables at scale. Nigeria will need to integrate an unprecedented 7GW additional renewable capacity each year to achieve net-zero.”
On energy access, Buhari declared that Nigeria’s commitment to a just transition is reflected in ‘‘our ambitious Energy Compact, which includes the Government’s flagship project to electrify 5million households and 25million people using decentralised solar energy solutions.’’
He described the project as a major first step towards closing energy access deficit in the country by 2030.
On green projects in the county, the president declared that Federal Government agencies have been directed to ensure the inclusion of projects with Climate Change credentials in the budget.
‘‘I am happy to state that the 2022 budget, which I recently submitted to our National Assembly, is the first cross-sectoral, gender and climate-responsive budget ever prepared in the annals of our history.
The president announced that the National Assembly has also passed the Climate Change Bill, which provides a framework for achieving low greenhouse gas emissions, inclusive green growth and sustainable economic development.
He concluded his address with a note of caution, saying, ‘‘The outcome of this conference must result in quick resolution of all outstanding issues pertaining to the finalization of the Paris Agreement Rulebook, Adaptation, Mitigation, Finance, Article 6 and Loss and Damage.’’

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has advocated the need for peace to propel conducive environment to deliver good governance and greater development of the State and the nation.
Accordingly, he has assured of his administration’s readiness to continue to promote peace in the State for the overall benefit of all living and doing business in the State.
Governor Fubara made the assertion when he received members of the International Association of World Peace Advocates, Eminent Peace Ambassadors, Rivers State Chapter on a Road Walk to commemorate the 2024 International Day of Peace at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Saturday.
Represented by the Head of Service, Rivers State Civil Service, Dr George Nwaeke, Governor Fubara, emphasized the need for residents to continue to preach the message of peace in the State and Nigeria at large, particularly at this time when the nation is at crossroads.
He thanked members of the association for embarking on the road walk to mark the International Day of Peace, and also identifying with the peaceful disposition of the present administration under his leadership.
He said, “Thank you for identifying with the Governor and the special qualities he possesses. Like you said, he has the capacity, but he refuses to fight back. That shows innermost strength, and that’s a very important ingredient for peace. Our Governor possesses it in exceeding volume.
“So, I want to thank you for marking today: the International Day of Peace. We need to preach peace to all corners of our State. We need to preach peace in our families, especially in this season that we find ourselves as Rivers people and as Nigerians'”, he asserted.
He assured that, “Our administration will continue to act in a way that will bring peace to the State, and at the end of the day, we will all be beneficiaries of the outcome of that peace advocacy.”
Earlier, Director, International Association of World Peace Advocates, Eminent Peace Ambassadors, Rivers State Chapter, Juliet Wokocha, had said that the road walk is part of activities by the United Nations body to mark the 2024 International Day of Peace with the theme: “Cultivating a Culture of Peace.”
Wokocha, who noted that peace cannot be kept by force, but can only be achieved by understanding, stated that they were in Government House to show solidarity with the Governor for his peaceful disposition, pledge their support, and also urge him to sustain the peace so far achieved in the State.
She said, “We have notified the Governor through our letter that we will be undertaking a road walk to mark the day of peace, because we want to let people know that the answer to every situation is peace.”
According to her, “Our Governor is the best Governor as far as peace is concerned in the world, not Nigeria. His tolerance level is too much. Anybody with his capacity would have taken powers into his hands, and caused situations that would trigger unrest and affect the citizens. But he is not like that. He is saying, let us maintain peace, whether justice is done or not, let us maintain peace.
“And so, this association that is affiliated with the United Nations has come to say, we are supporting him. We have come here to tell him that we are pledging our support. We will keep supporting him, and we are also urging him to keep maintaining peace” for the good of the State.
She added, “Right now, as we are commemorating here in Rivers State, different parts of the world as far as you are UN affiliated in this association, are commemorating the peace in their areas. But we decided to do road walk so that people will see us and key in.
“So, please, let us maintain peace in this State. We need peace to survive, as peace promotes development, allows for growth, and every good thing the citizens would want from our present Governor, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara,” she noted.
