Voter Registration: Residents Request More Machines For Wards In C’River
Eligible voters have appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deploy more machines to different wards to ease the suffering of residents who have to travel long distances to register.
Indigenes of Akpabuyo made the appeal on Friday at the local government area headquarters.
Many, who turned up to register as voters, said they travelled from far-flung parts of the local government to participate in the exercise.
45-year-old Cobham Ene, from Esighi community, who said he missed the last registration due to ill health, advised INEC to help the elderly in the hinterlands by having centres in local wards nearest to the people.
“There are very elderly citizens in distant communities who cannot travel long distances. So INEC should help them by creating closer registration centres and put necessary security measures, too, so that smarter politicians do not manipulate the machines.”
Another resident, Affiong Okon, said she came from a very far distance for the registration only to meet a very large crowd.
Chairman of Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, Emmanuel Offiong Bassey, also appealed to INEC to consider the plea of the electorate and deploy additional machines to the council area with 10 political wards.
Bassey was at the INEC office in Ikot Nakanda, Akpabuyo local government area to monitor the exercise in his local government area.
He said using just one machine for the registration exercise was grossly inadequate to take care of the local government.
“I want to plead with INEC to send additional machines to Akpabuyo to get more people registered, especially now that we are entering the election period, so that no legible voter would be disenfranchised”.
He pleaded with the people of the local government who came out to register, to be patient as there were efforts to bring more machines to the area for an effective registration exercise.
The INEC Public Relations Officer in the state, Ikpeme Inyang, assured that soon, more machines would be sent to many wards but that the issue of security of the machines remained a concern.
