Use Agriculture To Stop Kpo Fire
The Rivers State chapter of the All farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), has called on the state and federal government to put in place policies and programes that will divert the attention of the youths from illegal oil bunkering popularly known as “kpo fire” to agriculture.
State chairman of the association, Comrade Ofimaobari Igwe, who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, said agriculture was the only alternative to kpo fire.
Igwe said massive investment in the sector can divert the attention of those involved in kpo fire to agriculture, stressing that agriculture is not only lucrative but has little or no negative impact on the environment.
He said some of the youths can take to fish farming, others rice, adding that within three to six months, they are ready for harvest.
”Let’s develop the farming industry to train our youths who are into kpo fire”.
”As they are stopping the kpo fire they should encourage agriculture. They should invest in agriculture to stop illegal oil bunkering”.
”Those youths, if they are left alone, will go into criminal activities,” he said.
Meanwhile, Igwe has decried the low turnout of farmers for registration.
He said last year, very few farmers turned out for registration, stating that the figures as it is now is slightly above 500.
Igwe urged that such numbers are not in the interest of agriculture, stressing that there are many opportunities both within and outside the country that the association can attract to farmers in the state.
”We are ready to identify with farmers to assist them their in production and also help in financial aspect”.
”They should come to the office to pick up their forms, they should identify with the association. AFAN has network all over the county for easy accessibility he said.
He called on government to also assist farmers with loans.
AFAN chairman also advised farmers in flood proned areas to go for crops that have short life span to avoid them being destroyed by flood.
”They should plant on time and harvest on time, they should plant crops that they can harvest early” he said.
