Ariolu Lauds NASS For Passage Of Bill To Correct Name Of Obio/Akpor
The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Barrister George Ariolu, has commended the National Assembly for approving to the bill to correct the spelling of the name of the local government area.
He also lauded the lawmaker representing the Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Kingsley Chinda, for sponsoring the motion to correct the name from its former spelling, Obia/Akpor to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
Ariolu stated this at the Council Headquarters in Rumuodomaya while reacting to the bill recently passed by the National Assembly to correct the name of the area as captured in the 1999 Constitution.
The chairman said the decision of the National Assembly to correct the name was a good development for the entire people of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State and Nigeria.
During the 7th Assembly of the House of Representatives and Senate, Chinda had moved a motion to effect a correction on the spelling of Obio/Akpor, which was voted alongside 67 other amendments to the 1999 Constitution on March 1, 2022 by members of the National Assembly, and subsequently passed as a bill same day.
“I think it is good news to hear that the National Assembly has voted for the correction of the name to Obio/Akpor. That is good news to hear. Like I have always said, what is important now is what the people want. The moment you do what the people want, you’ll see happiness everywhere,” he stated.
“I see this as a welcome development for the people of Obio/Akpor and Rivers State. And I will urge the good people of our beloved LGA to embrace these changes, because it is for their own interest.
“And I commend the Senate President and the Speaker, House of Representatives, all the principal officers and members who felt the importance of listening to what is good for the citizens.”
