NDE Trains 100 Unskilled Youths In Sustainable Agriculture In Bayelsa
National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has begun training 100 unskilled youths on sustainable agriculture in Bayelsa to enable them contribute to national development.
Director-General of NDE, Mr Nuhu Fikpo, represented by the Bayelsa Coordinator, Mr Aham Osuchukwu, said this at the opening of the training in Yenagoa yesterday.
Our correspondent reports that the training, which will last for three months, comprises fish farming, poultry production, snailry and crop farming.
Fikpo urged the youth to embrace agriculture and its value chain, as they were the only viable sector providing employment opportunities in the country.
He stated that through NDE’s interventions, the Federal Government was providing employment for the unemployed youths, increasing food production, ensuring food security, enhancing quality of life, promoting youth self-esteem, reducing rural-urban migration and inculcating the spirit of entrepreneurship in them.
Fikpo stated that 38 youths, who had completed their training in the scheme, were granted loans of N3.8 million at the rate of 100,000 per person.
“The loan is repayable at the rate of nine per cent simple interest over a period of three years,” he said.
The coordinator urged the beneficiaries to invest properly so as to generate enough returns on their agricultural investment.
Also speaking, an early beneficiary of the loan scheme, Mr Livinus Lagos, explained that out of the loan granted him by NDE, he had established cassava, plantain and fish farms, with more than 2,000 fishes waiting to be harvested.
