1,444 Human Trafficking Victims Rescued Within One Year -NAPTIP
The National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), says it has rescued over 1,444 persons in Akwa Ibom State since last year. Out of the figure, 723 of the victims were from Akwa Ibom while 413 were from Cross River State while 282 and 16 were from Bayelsa and Rivers States respectively.
Uyo Zonal Commander of the agency, Mrs. Tina Ugwumade this known in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State while interacting with newsmen yesterday. He said the Agency also investigated over 568 of the 1,035 cases it received and convicted 62 traffickers while 11 were still in court.
“For the number of cases received, the command received 1,035 cases with 1,035 suspects. It investigated over 568 cases. The command convicted about 52 traffickers in the zone with 11 cases still in court at different levels of prosecution. Then, specifically for my assumption that’s from the beginning of March, the commandant has had about 17 cases. We have about 10 of them under investigation and three that are fully investigated. We have about three cases with our legal elite which they are going to file today and tomorrow,” she said.
The Zonal Commander who also decried the high incidences of sale of babies in Akwa Ibom State, said that efforts have intensified to apprehend those who perpetuate the crime. She said the agency’s collaboration with sister agencies at the borders has produced outstanding results as most of the cases handled by the agency were transferred from them while NAPTIP has assisted in giving some of their staff strategic training in their operations.
She decried the activities of many Traditional Birth Attendants and warned that the agency would not spare any of them found culpable even as she regretted that most couples connive with them in their illegal activities. “And to make matters worse, some families agree to this procedure and the so-called pregnant mothers know they are not pregnant but because of desperation to own a child accept any condition, they are given by those homes. And those homes have always found a way to evade arrest but we have a Task Force in place to monitor the TBAs with pieces of evidence of an agreement between them and couples,” she said.

Kalabari Media Forum Hails Recognition Of Dokubo Asari As Amayanabo
The Kalabari Media Forum has endorsed the recognition of Alabo, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo Asari as the Amayanabo of Torusarama Piri and the historical relevance of the award.
A communique issued after the 2024 end of year summit of the Forum also commends the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminialaye Joseph Fubara for the recognition which they described as the best end of year gift to the Kalabari people.
The Communique signed by the Coordinator of the Forum, Alabo Dagogo Clinton and the Secretary, Mr. Harry Awolayeofori Macmorrison states that the gesture should make the Kalabari people to get back to the drawing board and consolidate on existing inter and intra communal peace within the region.
According to the statement, Torusarama Piri was the first place where the founding fathers of Kalabari converged from different cultures, tribes and backgrounds. Adding that those saying that the Kalabari people are not united should think again.
” As the different founding fathers were able to form a formidable ethnic nationality, modern day Kalabari should be able to sink the differences between the constituent communities and with other non-Kalabari speaking neighbours to achieve the needed internal cohesion for development”. It states.
The Forum further congratulated Alabo Asari Dokubo on his recognition and urged him to use the opportunity to do even more for the Kalabari people and Rivers State as a whole.
According to the statement, the Forum is happy with the recognition of Dokubo Asari not because he is one of the patrons of the Forum, but because he is about the most Kalabari-centric figure living, who has also committed enormous resources for the protection of the Kalabari people.
They urged the Kalabari Se Kobiri and the entire people of the ethnic nationality to work with Alabo Dokubo Asari and put to rest speculations about Kalabari that some persons have exploited against the interest of the Kalabari people over the years.
