LG Boss Doles Out N1m Empowerment Largesse to Traders, Others
As part of his empowerment programmes, the Executive Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Council of Rivers State, Dr. Enyiada Cookey-Gam, recently distributed over N1 million cash to some traders in the area with a view to making them economically stable.
More than 100 persons, including traders and the aged, were given cash ranging between N50,000.00 and N200,000.00 to assist in their businesses and welfare.
Three persons each from the 11 political wards that made up the local government area benefited from the scheme.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman, who was represented by the Supervisory Councilor for Works and Transport, Hon. Asinyetogha Uranta, stated that the empowerment scheme was his intervention to cater for the needs of the people.
We realize indigent traders and the aged need financial encouragement to fulfill their desires. We are giving traders cash to assist them in their businesses, while the elderly in the area needs our care, he said.
According to him, “this is not the first time we are doing this and I want to assure you that it will not be the last.
The council boss further stated that soon more persons would be accorded this opportunity, adding that the sum given to them should be judiciously utilized for their own betterment, with the belief that it will go a long way in alleviating the peoples problems and also put smiles on the faces of the electorate.
While calling on other leaders in the Local Government Area to emulate the quality leadership of the Chairman, a beneficiary of the empowerment scheme, Madam Lydia Pepple, urged the Chairman not to relent on his welfare oars by ensuring that more of such programmes are put in place.
To this end, Dr. Cookey-Gam promised that more of these schemes are up-coming, assuring that those who have not benefited from the current programme will do so in next one.
Also lending credence, a beneficiary who clocked 85 recently, described the gesture as the will of God for mankind, urging the council boss not to relent in his quest to encourage the masses that are indigent in the society for peace and industrial harmony to thrive.
