NDDC: AUPTRE Protests N’Delta Ministry’s Interference
The Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPTRE), Rivers State Chapter, has lent its support to the call by the national body to inaugurate the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The union made the call against the backdrop of a protest at the NDDC’s Headquarters in Port Harcourt, last Monday.
It would be recalled that the national body of the union had issued a statement last week, condemning what it described as unnecessary interference of the Ministry of Niger Delta in the NDDC affairs, and called for immediate inauguration of the NDDC Board.
The Tide reports that members of the union in Rivers State had stormed the headquarters of the commission last Monday to protest incessant personnel audit of the commission without results.
Some of the placards carried by the protesters read, ‘Stop Political and Personal Interest In NDDC’; ‘Staff of NDDC Say No To Political Interference’; and ‘Don’t Threaten the Corporate Existence of NDDC’.
Chairman, AUPTRE, Rivers State, Comrade Tamunoiminabo Tobins, in an interview with The Tide, supported the call for the inauguration of the NDDC Board.
He also decried what he called “incessant personnel audit of the commission without results”.
According to him, the union was not happy with what is going on in NDDC.
“Auditing, auditing, auditing, and we are not seeing the result of the auditing and we are saying No to it”, he said.
Tobins stressed that the non-availability of a board at the commission was hampering its functions.
“They should reconstitute and inaugurate the Board of the NDDC. That is what we want now”, he said.
The union also called for adequate funding of the commission to enable it meet the yearnings of the people of the Niger Delta.
The AUPTRE Chairman said the commission should not be put under the control of the Niger Delta Affairs Ministry as it was established by an Act of parliament.
The union leader noted that the unnecessary interference in the affairs of the commission negates the very essence for which it was set up.
