TCN Cautions Against Right Of Way Encroachment
The newly inaugurated committee on Eradication, Elimination of Encroachment on the Right of Way by Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has pledged to work with all security agencies and relevant parastatals to stop the encroachment on the Right of Way nationwide .
Chairman of the Committee and TCN General Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, Kangeh Cephas, said this during a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Rivers State Command, and the Ministry of Environment, Rivers State.
According to him, the statistics of people that have built businesses and building structures around transmission lines regardless of the dangers attached to it is alarming.
Cephas noted that there are laws governing the Right of Way, and encouraged security agents to ensure that these laws are enforced.
He stated that regional sub-committee has been inaugurated to enable smooth implementation of these laws and further called on the Ministry of Environment to not allow people to build around these lines when they apply for it.
“Due to these encroachment, we cannot have free access to maintain the lines. And ones we can’t maintain these lines it could snap.
“Another worry is the safety health of the people as emissions from lines can cause health hazards”, he said.
Speaking, Rivers State Commandant of NSCDC, Ogar Michael, assured TCN of the command’s full involvement in recovering encroached Right of Way.
Ogar also said the Command will provide security for all the transmission lines and also to TCN team as they move to evacuate defaulters.
“We are on ground to work with the committee to sensitise and ensure enforcement of the law for breaching the right of way. Your call is our First Charge and we will not compromise any standard”, he said.
Also speaking, the Director, Inspectorate and Enforcement, Pst. Emmanuel Fienemika, said the government cares about the wellbeing of the people and is also committed to ensure that both lives and infrastructures are safe.
He emphasised on the need to sensitise the people on the dangers associated with encroaching these lines, saying that many people have done it ignorantly.
