Cleric Charges Christians On God’s Words
A clergy, Rev. Israel Adelani Akanji, has called on Christians in the world to live their lives in accordance with God’s words in the Bible, saying it is what will give them salvation after their time on earth.
Akanji, who is the President of Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC), made the call, Saturday, during a special service to mark the centinary celebration of First Baptist Church, Port Harcourt, said the kingdom of God is for all, rich, poor, etc.
Taking his teaching from the book of Luke 16:19-31, in which a rich man who refuse to take care of Lazarus, who was poor and needed the crumbs from the rich man’s table to survive, but later died and went to hell, while Lazarus went to heaven, with the rich man begging him (Lazarus) for drop of water, Akanji said it’s only the word of God in them as Christians that can give them salvation.
“The intention of the message is to make us know that the kingdom of God is for all. God is ready to receive the rich, He is ready to receive the poor. What God wants in us is for us to internalize His words, let His words dwell in us. Anyone who comes to God receives salvation.
“In the passage, the rich man was dwelling so much on the things of the world. He didn’t care about his spirit. That’s why he lost it when he left the world. He was in torment”, he said.
He stated that as the church celebrates 100 years of teaching the word of God, the celebration should be about the number of people that have yeilded to the word of God.
“We’re celebrating 100 years. Hundred years of? Of people coming out of darkness into light, people going into the kingdom of God, and we want in the next 100 years for the history to continue.
“That people who have come here, none of them will regret life. But they would have listened to lessons of life, and known how to live, and they would find themselves having eternal life.
“So, what we’re saying to all of us is that everyone needs salvation, and we’re saying that the Ministry of this church should be such that after we have spent all our time in this world, we should all end it in salvation and eternal life, because that is the goal and purpose of the church”, he said.
Rev. Akanji, therefore, urged all Christians, particularly Baptists, to “allow the word or God to dwell in our hearts”.
Commenting on the centinary celebration, Chairman of the Centinary Planning Committee, Alabo Charles I. T. Numbere, said he could only give the glory to God for a successful organisation.
“We had challenges, but at the end of the day, God proved Himself”, he said.
Highlights of the occasion included the award of several individuals for their contributions to the development of the church, and cutting of the Centinary Cake, under the leadership of Rev Akanji.
