The Akwa Ibom State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, has distributed special phones and white canes worth millions of naira to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr Ini Adiakpan, who made the distribution on Wednesday in Uyo, said it was in commemoration of the 2022 International White Cane Day to sensitise the people on the significance of white canes.
The Tide source reports that the event, organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, has the theme, “Fright White Cane”.
She said the event was intended to make our people fully aware of the significance of white canes and the need for motorists to exercise special care for blind persons carrying the white canes.
“The white cane in our society is a mobility tool and symbol of a blind person’s ability to conquer mobility challenges and invite special reconsideration to the blind on our streets and highways.
“It is quite apt and timely that the theme is ‘Fright White Cane’, and the mission today is also targeted on how the blind and visually impaired can live, move around and walk independently while giving back to their communities,” she said.
The commissioner said all forms of barriers, stigmatisation and discrimination against the blind must be removed.
Adiakpan added that the celebration was on the achievements and successes attained by the blind people in the state over the years.
She said the effort of the ministry had given hope to many blinds in the state as the blind had been well educated beyond barriers, adding that blindness did not impede achievement.
She also warned the blind against aggressive behaviour due to their impairment.
Adiakpan called on them to think beyond their impediment and self-pity as many people were also facing different challenges but still living happily.
The commissioner said visually impaired persons were trained on how to use the special phones given to them.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman, Nigerian Association of the Blind, Akwa Ibom Chapter, Mr Ubong Ben, commended the government for supporting persons with impaired vision across the state.
He thanked the State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, for appointing one of them into the state civil service and for empowering blind students in universities.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has begun the payment of N50,000 monthly stipends to 10,000 indigenous youths from the Niger Delta under its Youths Internship Scheme.
The Director of Corporate Affairs at the NDDC, Mrs Seledi Thompson-Wakama, disclosed this to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, yesterday.
She explained that the beneficiaries would undergo practical, hands-on training across the various organisations for 12 months to develop critical skills.
Recall that during the inauguration of the scheme on July 31, 2024, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had announced the Federal Government’s approval of a N50,000 monthly stipend for the trainees.
According to Thompson-Wakama, the commission has successfully completed the selection process and has begun placing trainees in organisations to gain practical experience.
“Consequently, with the completion of these phases, the payment of the monthly stipends has also commenced,” she announced.
She revealed that the 10,000 beneficiaries were transparently selected from over 3.2 million youths who registered for the empowerment programme.
“This unprecedented response highlights the immense potential and aspirations of our youths to improve themselves.
“NDDC remains steadfast in ensuring this life-changing opportunity reaches the most deserving candidates, creating a lasting impact and paving the way for a brighter future,” she stated.
Thompson-Wakama explained that the scheme had enabled the commission to collate essential data, including the qualifications, skills, interests, needs, and employment status of the youths in the region.
The data, she explained, would guide the commission in designing programmes tailored to address the unique challenges faced by young people.
She disclosed that the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a global audit and consultancy firm, to enhance the commission’s corporate governance framework.
“KPMG has produced a Governance Advisory Report that will serve as a tool to support the commission’s transition from a transaction-based to a transformation-focussed policy,” Thompson-Wakama added.
The director commended the youths for their patience and cooperation during the selection process for the scheme.
