Former Mayor Stripped Of Chieftaincy Title
The Port Harcourt Local Government Area Council of Traditional Rulers has stripped Chief Azubuike Nmerukini of his honorary chieftaincy title of Okpahia Obanu -onha which was conferred on him during the reign of Eze Epara Rebisi XI. Nmerukini was a former Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council.
This was contained in a press statement read to newsmen in Port Harcourt.
The statement signed by Eze Okachukwu Abbey, secretary to the council and read by Eze Arthur Kalagbor said by the decision, Hon Azubuike Nmerukini is dismissed from the council and should not parade himself any further as a chief in the Rebisi Kingdom.
According to the council,”this decision is consequent upon the painstaking consideration of Hon Azubuike Nmerukini’s distractive and divisive activities in the Rebisi Kingdom and the council’s conclusion that his continued membership serves no further useful purpose.
“The council noted with sadness that rather than use his privileged position as a chief to sustain peace and harmony among the Rebisi people, Hon. Nmerukini had instead worked to divide the people and encourage acts of disrespect to the constituted traditional authorities of the Rebisi Kingdom”.
It further noted that Nmerukini had continuously shunned every opportunity to justify the age-long obligations and expectations placed on chiefs invested in traditional leadership positions in the Rebisi Kingdom.
It would be recalled that last week, women from the Rebisi Kingdom under the aegis of the Rebisi Kingdom Women Forum also accused Chief Nmerukini of allegedly reporting the Queen Mother of Port Harcourt, HRM Dr (Mrs) Juliet Elikwu to the Rivers State Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs.
When contacted, chief Azubuike Nmerukini said he had no comment on his suspension.
Nmerukini was a former chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area and also former Chairman of Rivers State Local Government service Commission as well as a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
