Edo 2024: INEC Opens Candidates’ Nomination Portal
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Monday, opened candidates nomination portal for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.
Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, confirmed this in a chat with The Tide’s source.
INEC had, last week, said political parties have from Monday, March 4, to 6pm of Sunday, March 24, 2024, to file their nominations.
It also asked political parties participating in the Edo governorship election to work within the timeline for the nomination of candidates, saying it would not grant any extension.
INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, gave the charge in a statement issued last Friday, in Abuja.
Olumekun had noted that as provided by the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the forthcoming off-cycle Edo State governorship election, the deadline for the conduct of primaries by political parties expired on February 24, 2024.
According to him, the next activity is the submission of nomination forms by political parties via the dedicated online portal.
He said: “The commission has earmarked a period of 20 days for political parties to upload the Personal Particulars (Form EC9) and Names/List of Nominated Candidates (Form EC9B) of their candidates to the portal which will open at 9.00am on Monday 4th March 2024 and automatically shut down at 6.00pm on Sunday 24th March 2024. Access Code to the portal will be available for collection by national chairmen of political parties from today (Monday).”
“The commission wishes to draw the attention of political parties that 20 days are enough to upload the nomination forms of only two candidates per party (Governorship candidate and running mate). Therefore, there is no reason to request for extension of time and none will be granted beyond Sunday 24th March 2024. Political parties should ensure strict compliance with the timelines.”

NASS Sets Date For 2025 Budget Passage
Chairman, Senate committee on appropriations, Sen. Solomon Adeola, stated this on Monday in Abuja at a meeting with the chairmen of standing committees in the Senate.
According to him, Jan. 31 is the date for laying of reports on the appropriation bill before the Senate and the House of Representatives.
He said upon resumption from Christmas and New Year break on Jan. 14, both chambers of the national assembly would suspend plenary for two weeks for budget defence by ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
Sen. Adeola also said that NASS had fixed Jan. 9 for an open day on the budget to enable various stakeholders, aside heads of MDAs, to make inputs on the budget.
“A tentative time table has been drawn for consideration of the budget at committee level.
“Budget defence sessions begin from Jan. 7, while reports from various committees are expected to be submitted from 15th to 18th of this month.
“Afterwards, collation and tidying up of the various reports will be done by the appropriation committee, with the hope of laying final report on the budget at the Senate on 31st of this month.
“However, the 31st of January fixed for laying of the budget is tentative, as it is just given to guide our work,” he said.
The principal officers of the Senate who attended the meeting included: the Deputy Leader, Sen. Lola Ashiru and Senate Whip, Sen. Tahir Monguno.
They said that the timeframe for consideration and passage of the 2025 budget by the national assembly was short.
They, however, expressed hope on the timely passage of the budget.
The committee, thereafter, went into a closed door session with chairmen of the various standing committees in the Senate.
