Eschew Politics of Bitterness To Save Economy, Fubara Cautions Politicians

Published

on

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has advised politicians to be circumspect with their politicking activities in order not to, either deliberately or otherwise, use them to undermine peace, economic growth prospects of the State and the nation at large.

Governor Fubara gave the advice when he received a delegation of the House of Representatives Committee on Ports and Harbours, led by its Chairman, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji, on a courtesy visit to Government House in Port Harcourt, yesterday.

The delegation was in Rivers State to perform familiarisation with and conduct oversight functions at the Port Harcourt, Onne Sea Ports, and Bonny channels, which are under their preview.

Governor Fubara said the Sea Ports are essential facilities that will contribute in harvesting the rich gains of the blue economy, adding that those who are delighted seeing them remain inactive and moribund do not mean well for the State and the country.

The Governor stated: “about nine years ago, if you understand the calculation; somebody here was the senior Minister of Transport, nothing happened at our ports. Every progress that was supported to come to the Sea Ports here, because of bitter politics was stopped. That is why our ports are moribund today.

“Today, after another eight years, which this other person suffered, we have entered into another similar era. If you love this State, it is normal to support everything that will bring progress and development to this State.”

Governor Fubara emphasised: “It is not about who is sitting here today. It is about the State. If the State continues to go down, what is the interest? The only reason why we are struggling is because of the allocation.

“The only reason why we are struggling is to make sure that you have control of the treasury. But the treasury will also get fat if the sea ports are working. Revenue will increase. Your plan for expansion will also become large with internal revenue.

“So, I want everybody to understand that politics of bitterness will not take us anywhere. It is only a thing that will lead you to early grave because once joy is taken away from a man’s life, it is anger, and anger leads to destruction of souls.

“So, please, for those of you who took this bold decision to come to see us and to make this possible, we want to thank you and assure you that no matter what it takes, we will not take the path of bitter politics.”

Governor Fubara insisted that politics should be rightly situated as a game with a winner to emerge at any particular time, and those who may not be lucky with winning should not indulge in acts that will destroy the system.

The Governor told members of the committee of the determination of his administration to give the requisite support that will lead to a total revamp and full capacity operations of all the Sea Ports and blue sea commercial channels in the State.

The Governor said when the reports of the committee are made public, his administration will note the recommendations and ensure that they are implemented.

He also berated those labelling the State as crisis-ridden as concerted from the figment of their imagination of what is not true.

He insisted that Rivers State is peaceful, safe and on the move to actualise more development, adding that nothing can happen, which will be worse than the October 30, 2023 event in the State.

In his speech, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Ports and Harbours, Rt Hon Nnolim Nnaji said the visit to the Governor was part of the familiarization visit and to conduct oversight functions of the Port Harcourt Ports, Onne Ports and the Bonny Channel.

He stated that considering the importance of Rivers State to the economy of Nigeria, they decided to visit Rivers State first.

He said: “We also use the opportunity to encourage the State to support the programme of ports because we believe that new programme on Blue Economy will attract trillions of dollars when fully invested in.

“So, we are happy that we are here and we believe that Rivers State plays a major role in the Port programme. We want to also let you know that we as a committee, we are doing everything possible to support the upgrading of Port Harcourt and Onne Ports. In our budget, we are also doing a lot to see how we can support the Bonny Channels,” he added.

FG Steps Down Minimum Wage Memo For More Consultations

Published

on

The Federal Executive Council yesterday stepped down a memorandum on the report of the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage.

This is to allow for more consultations between President Bola Tinubu, state governors, local government authorities and the private sector.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this to journalists, yesterday, after the FEC’s meeting at the State House, Abuja.

Idris said the council deferred acting on the memo given that the Federal Government is not the sole stakeholder on the national minimum wage issue.

According to him, the President needs to interact with other wage-paying entities to factor their contributions and circumstances into the executive bill on the matter that will be passed on to the National Assembly for passage into law.

“I want to inform Nigerians here that the Federal Executive Council deliberated on that (minimum wage) and the decision is that because the new national minimum wage is not just that of the Federal Government, it is an issue that involves the Federal Government, the state governments, local governments, and the organised private sector and of course, including the organised labour.

“That memo was stepped down to enable Mr President to consult further, especially with the state governors and the organised private sector, before he makes a presentation to the National Assembly before an executive bill is presented to the National Assembly.

“So I want to state that on the new national minimum wage, Mr President is going to consult further so that he can have an informed position because the new national minimum wage, as I said, is not just an issue of the Federal Government,” Idris stated.

He added that the President has studied the report and will “consult wider before a final submission is being made to the National Assembly.”

The Tripartite Committee on the new national minimum wage established in January had reviewed the wages to N62,000 from the current N30,000. The committee comprises the government’s team, the organised labour and the organised private sector.

However, the organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress demanded N250,000 living wage.

Yesterday’s decision follows a statement by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, saying that the organised labour had expected the President to reach out to the members of the Tripartite Committee to harmonise the figure.

Ajaero said this is expected given a stalemate at the end of the Tripartite Committee meeting.

Fubara Dispels Rumours of Crisis ….Insists Rivers Is Peaceful, Not Under Siege ….Inspects 14.6km Omodu-Eberi-Omuma Road

Published

on

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has emphasised that the State and its people are enjoying an enduring atmosphere of peace to promote sustainable development, fast-paced investments and accelerated economic growth.
He said the recent negative narrative that portrays the State as immersed in crisis with disrupted peace is untrue, misguided and was the handiwork of mischief makers.
Governor Fubara made the clarification when he spoke to newsmen in Egbelu Community, shortly after inspecting the progress of work on the 14.6km Omodu-Eberi Road project in Omuma Local Government Area on Thursday.
The Governor said it was important that Nigerians know of the uninterrupted peaceful atmosphere in the State because the people are going about their  normal activities, while governance was thriving.
He stated: “And to also tell Nigerians that Rivers State is peaceful. You can see that we are moving about inspecting projects as against what you see on the screens of your television sets that police are everywhere, that we don’t move about anymore, and that Rivers State is under siege.
“We are not under siege. Our State is free and peaceful. If at all there is any problem in any part of the State, I know quite well that Nigerians know where the problem is coming from, not from us,” he clarified.
Governor Fubara emphasised: “We are peace-loving people. It is already written all over us. Our actions and our deeds have confirmed that we are peace-loving people.
“We will continue to maintain the peace that we promised everyone, for the betterment of the good people of Rivers State,” he added, and encouraged the business community, especially potential investors to take advantage of the vast investment opportunities that abound in the State.
Commenting on the 14.6km Omodu-Eberi Road project, Governor Fubara stated that the project was started by his administration with the target of inaugurating it during his one year in office anniversary.
Governor Fubara explained that what delayed the work was the decision to extend the length of the road to make it serve as a comfortable link for motorists to drive onto Abia State.
The Governor said: “We are in Omuma to inspect the project that we started. The project was supposed to be part of projects commissioned during our one year anniversary celebrations.
“But we found out that some part of the job, if completed, will link Rivers State to Abia State, and we felt there is no need to commission it halfway without joining that part that connects us to Abia State.”
Governor Fubara further said: “So, we directed the Ministry of Works to extend the project from 8 kilometers to 14.6 kilometers. So, we are here to see what is happening, and to prepare ourselves that maybe in the next two months, we might likely be coming here to commission this project for the good people of Omuma.”
